We’ve all been there. Someone sends you a link to their “artsy” vacation pictures, you click on the link, and your first reaction upon seeing 1 of 1200 is “Holy crap! I don’t want to look at all these.” But being a polite soul, you look through your friend’s, or worse, your casual acquaintance’s, pictures trying to find a few that you can say something nice about.

This is the unpleasant result of having an endless amount of space to store your images. Nobody has to get rid of anything anymore. So we get all excited, send every picture we’ve ever shot to our ‘friends’ and hope that they will do our job, which is editing our work.

I used to have this problem with a very close friend, a professional photographer. Weekly, he would send me links with thousands of pictures. He would say to me, “Just glance through them and tell me which ones you like.” I would tell him to stuff it. He thought I was being unreasonable. I felt a little unreasonable.

But then I thought, “Now, just a minute. I built a website where I spent month after month pouring over images to select only the best of the best for people to see.” I did the work so that the viewer didn’t have to. I mean, I’m asking someone to look at my photography. Asking them to also swim through all my rejects doesn’t seem like a very polite thing to do.

Plus, if I only post my best work, it makes it look like everything I shoot is great.

I have a method that I use that works well for me. I view my work, despise it, then put it away for a week or two. Then I view it again, despise it a little less, edit it some, then put it away for a bit longer.

This separation distances me from the shooting experience so that I can look at the images more objectively. Soon, I’ve boiled it down to only those images I really want people to see, the ones that really stand out; the ones that I hope people will want to see.

Often, I’ve returned from a road trip or vacation and shown people just a few images from it, even though I shot 100s. Those few images knock them out. The ones I don’t show them are anything from fairly good to putrid. But by only showing them these few, my friends are convinced that I’ll be famous any day now. I can’t argue with that. And it leaves them wanting to see more.

So please, do everyone a favor, including yourself; edit your images so that others don’t have to. People will actually look at them, and they’ll probably like you a little more for not dragging them through image hell.
