Sigma 70-200mm HSM II Lens Review

Here I take a look at the Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 HSM II lens for Nikon cameras. Its an amazing lens at an amazing price.

Two great factors for purchasing a 3rd celebration lens are to obtain functions the digital camera producer doesn’t provide in 1 of its personal lenses (for example a various focal duration or focal duration variety) or to conserve cash. The main cause to purchase the Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG HSM II Macro Lens would be to conserve cash as Canon currently has 4 excellent-performing 70-200mm versions such as the similarly-spec’d Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L USM Lens. So, is there a trade-off for that reduce cost? That may be the large query.

My frustrations began correct out from the box with this lens – bringing back memories of my time using the Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro Lens. I returned my very first Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG HSM II Macro Lens simply because there was a foreign object within the lens – it was big sufficient that I wouldn’t believe in it for an picture high quality evaluation. No issue – I merely returned it for one more.

I got additional with my 2nd Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG HSM II Macro Lens (it passed physical inspection). But, I rapidly determined throughout the ISO 12233 resolution chart check that this lens had a serious front-focus issue. The ISO 12233 chart outcomes are posted for this lens – please note that the 70mm and 85mm samples from this lens had been framed utilizing AF. The front-focusing was so poor that correct guide concentrating in the exact same shooting placement triggered the picture to become noticeably decreased within the frame when accurately manual-focused – producing the chart particulars slightly smaller than they ought to be. Don’t use samples from these two focal lengths from this lens sample for distortion comparisons.

The Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG HSM II Macro Lens is obtainable inside a broad variety of mounts such as Canon (reviewed), Nikon, Sigma, Sony/Minolta, Pentax and Four Thirds.

Complete disclosure: You ought to realize that you will find possible problems when utilizing a lens created by a producer other than the digital camera entire body producer. Because Sigma reverse engineers (vs. licenses) producer AF routines (except for their personal bodies), the possibility exists that a brand new entire body may not assistance an older 3rd celebration lens. Although not typical, this has occurred. Occasionally a lens could be rechipped to become created compatible, occasionally not. Once again unusual may be the scenario exactly where the lens and entire body producers location fault on every other for any issue. To its benefit is Sigma USA’s 4-year guarantee – it’s far outstanding to Canon’s regular 1 12 months guarantee. The danger is most likely lower, but you ought to figure this into your buy choice.

I usually purchase my lenses new/retail to mirror the encounter everybody else ought to anticipate to possess. Becoming for 3 on this lens design, I cannot in great faith suggest that anybody purchase this 1. This is really a shame as this lens has possible to become a great 1 – along with a really great worth.

I use to have the Sigma 70-210 2.8 Manual Focus Nikon…that lens was tack sharp. I used on a Nikon d70 & that was excellent as far as image quality. The lens is alot heavier than the newer lens. I am trying find one just to keep but is hard. I should not have sold it!!

@SuperMartijn1 it will work with a Sigma-branded teleconverter. I don’t think it will with a Nikon one.

Those were shot actually shot with the D90 and believe it or not at ISO 800! The D90 is incredibly sensitive to light.

Also I envy you and your schools lighting. I had to shoot with my D2H at ISO 1600, f/2.8 and could only get 1/250 on my shutter. Looks like you can get over 1/500 on those basketball photos. What ISO value did you have?

I recently purchased the sigma from KEH and returned it 3 days after I got it. Now I have the nikon 80-200 AF-D and let me tell you there is a big difference in build and image quality. I would recomend saving up the extra $300 and go for the nikon. But I know some people just can’t pay that much (I hardly could) and if the sigma is in you price range it’s a great lens for around $550 used.
